Clerys Advert 1932
Take a step back in time and experience what it was like to shop inside Clerys of O’Connell street in Dublin in the early 1930s. This charming advertisement was shot in 1932, just 10 years after the rebuilding of Clerys, which had been destroyed in the 1916 rising. With a bird’s eye view of the shop floor a wealth of choice is on offer, from shirts and skirts to a mini zoo to entertain the children, Clerys has “nearly everything you need”. From the wrought iron balcony the viewer is shown the hustle and bustle of the furniture department selling the highest quality furniture, fabric and carpets; then down to the basement, alive with bargain hunters; and finally to the café full of people unwinding after a successful day’s shopping. The store which thrived for decades finally closed its doors in 2015. It will continue to live on in the hearts of the many happy shoppers who frequented it.
Irish Hospital Sweepstakes: Draw
This Irish Hospital Sweepstakes advert of an actual draw was originally broadcast in the 1960’s.With over £285,000 at stake, if you had a ticket you had “as good a chance as anybody anywhere of winning”. TheIrish Hospitals’ Sweepstakewas a lottery established in theIrish Free Statein 1930 as theIrish Free State Hospitals’ Sweepstaketo finance hospitals. It is generally referred to as theIrish Sweepstake, frequently abbreviated toIrish Sweeps orIrish Sweep. It was established due to a need for investment in hospitals and medical services and the public finances were unable to meet this expense at the time. As the population of Ireland was unable to raise sufficient funds, because of its low population, a significant amount of the funds were raised in the United Kingdom and United States, often among the emigrant Irish. Each such ticket was assigned to a horse expected to run in one of severalhorse races, including theCambridgeshire Handicap,DerbyandGrand National. Tickets that drew the favourite horses thus stood a higher likelihood of winning and a series of winning horses had to be chosen on theaccumulatorsystem, allowing for enormous prizes. IRISH HOSPITAL SWEEPSTAKES – Vault advert
This colour advertisement from the 1970s for the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes, is one of many similar films preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive and contains the iconic tagline “If you’re not in, you can’t win”. TheIrish Hospitals’ Sweepstakewas a lottery that began in 1930 as theIrish Free State Hospitals’ Sweepstake, it was established due to a need for investment in hospitals and medical services at a time when the public finances of the fledgling state were unable to meet this expense. Due to low Irish population figures the number of tickets sold within the state was insufficient to raise the required funds, and therefore sales were heavily targeted in the United Kingdom and United States, often among the emigrant Irish, despite gambling being illegal in these countries at the time. Each sweepstake ticket was assigned to a horse expected to run in one of severalhorse races, with enormous prizes on offer. In January 1986, after nearly 60s years in operation, the final sweepstake draw was held, after a series of scandalous revelations about how the company had conducted its affairs; the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes went into voluntary liquidation in March 1987 With kind permission of The Department of Health.
